Lens diffraction is that the lens progressively loses sharpness as the aperture decreases (generally from what I understand). For more details or accuracy, you could read up on it. But if we are able to get a more sharp picture with increased depth of field, then it's worth it. Because of lens diffraction or even noise, people often avoid high F-stops or high ISO levels.

Thanks for the reply and interest. To be able to do that, find a flower that you can isolate. Look for them on a sunny day. Find one that has a shadow in the background...and there you go. :-) Try different F-stops. A "short" telephoto lens like I'm using works well. Your own shadow is not in the way when you take the photo because you can stand a little further from it. I try to focus on the petals that are not the closest and not the farthest away...somewhere in the middle.

I agree. I haven't seen something that is obviously a problem with lens diffraction. It might come down to people that look at these in tiny detail. I mainly look at the picture as a whole. I assume you do too.

I like your "confession". 😀 There are a lot of people that pixel peek. Sometimes I do that, but I'm so busy with the pictures I take that I don't do that much. People who know me, know that I do minimal post processing too. I try to get the best photos I can from the camera, so I can be "lazy" later when reviewing them during post processing on the computer. 😀

Oh, I see we can add smiley faces on DPRevived...way to go DPRevived staff...we like the progress this forum is making. 😃

Still in 2008 a then friend pointed out the local Long-eared owl over in his neighbourhood. Actually there were several of these owls in that tree but I could frame only one at the time considering 400mm.

Neat... When those owls hide in the branches under tree cover, they are sure hard to find and capture with our cameras. I've only seen them two times. Once it was on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada and another time near Walla Walla, Washington. I've seen them so few of times, that I remember both instances. I take photos almost every weekend...probably for over fifteen years...so I'm out a lot.

Thanks. I had seen some other people use them here previously, so I figured there must be a way. I'm just glad that DPRevived did it soon, so I didn't have to figure it out (using Google as our friend). 😀

Yes, I do enjoy post processing because I can evaluate what I did right or what I did wrong. Often it's in terms of composition or depth of field. But I'm so busy that I often have to do minimal post processing. I challenge myself to take the best photos "in the field". Like often, I'll try to keep the photos straight so I don't have to straighten them later. But with fast action activity, that sometimes is nearly impossible.
