This guy's got the answer as to how to make this site perfect.

Yes, I noticed that post earlier and was tempted to reply, but I couldn't be bothered

I'm banned from replying to him, so if anyone wants to....
Frankly, I think he's on a losing proposition there - especially given who he seems to think are 'the right moderators' (though he might have been making a play for Mako, I suppose).

Had the biggest laugh reading that on dpreview tonight. Oh the hilarity! Almost spat out my drink.

"...we all can experience now, how good it could be, if the right people and the right moderation come together." Oh -- the "right" people. Got it. Thought he said something that rhymed with that. : )

There certainly are a lot of arrogant, clueless photographers out there.

My wish for this place is if we could all answer Beginner questions with the simplicity they demand. “I took these photos and they came out blurry” doesn’t need a math treatise, an argument about the term “exposure triangle” or a description of RGGB. Just explain that they were out of focus or the shutter speed was too low.

“The answer to your question is X. If you need more help or want to learn more, let us know.”

On the other hand, the things I’ve learned from Bob, Iliah and Jim Kasson are pure gold. This forum has the best of the best.

I like to do the stats on photographic polls ...

Current "stay" versus "both" at 95% confidence level, population say 4000 ...

... about +/-10% margin of error for either one - so it could go either way.

I voted to stay but just went back to both

I think most of us can answer questions with simplicity. The problem on DPReview's BQ was not that people who know the theory could not give simple and well directed answers. Rather it was that when they did people who insisted that the theory is other than it is would challenge it, resulting in a long debate about what the theory was, which usually would finish up with the theory deniers, having lost all the rational arguments, denouncing teh theory itself and anyone who adhered to it. The other scenario was that one of the theory deniers would provide the poor beginner with an answer which was clearly wrong, would be challenged by someone who knew that - resulting in the same debate,

That’s why I stopped posting information there. Happened in each forum though. It would normally start with me pointing out an error in someone’s post. They would then say I didn’t know what I was talking about. I would post a test confirming they were mistaken. It then falls apart with them saying I faked the test, I’m a liar, I don’t use and experience the gear in question, etc, etc. Gets tiring. Best to let them enjoy their ignorance because it makes them happy.

I haven't decided. I gave up on them due to moderation, uneven enforcement of the rules, and their cowardice in dealing with known trolls. But I did like the film forum, which was always an oasis of good behavior. Some of the mods I had a problem with seem to be gone, and the well-known troll has moved elsewhere. Unfortunately some of the negativity still remains, and some of the people from whom I learned the most have gone away as well -- many are here, but here too they are plagued by people who want to turn learning opportunities into arguments, so the s/n ratio isn't great -- and with fewer beginners asking questions, there are fewer opportunities to learn new takes from people I respect.

Soooo, right now I'm lurking in both places, contributing to film here, and waiting to see how things shape up. I do think there's a chance that a "purged" DPR could evolve into something positive.

I think if Photrio had a forum structure similar to this one, with a beginner area and an open-talk forum, that'd be my main haunt, but the way they divide their forums subdivides the conversation a little too much, IMHO. Pentaxforums is great for film, but obviously pretty well centered on one brand.

Wait -- I can understand why Bob can be a controversial figure, but who the heck doesn't like Bill Ferris or Michael Fryd? They're two of the guys I learned the most from, and together with Bob (and, what the heck, you too, Great Bustard), they're one of the big reasons to put up with the other circular insulting nonsense that no one moderates and keep reading here.

Unfortunately was too late to enter the poll. I am not returning to dpreview.com other than to check prior post info or prior reviews. My forum sites for contributing will be this site and dprforum.com. Amazon/dpreview longevity confidence is zero.

If only the forums remained, I'd prefer to stay here.

But it sounds like Amazon could be in talks with a third party to take over the entire site, which could make it more (or far less!) tempting to return, depending on who that is. I wouldn't want to return there just to see the site shut down again in a couple of years. Dpreview commenting on the shutdown of Imaging Resource 4 weeks after its own announced shutdown date isn't encouraging...

We all count for that on @bobn2, and his huge wallet

( he is keeping very quiet the last few days - isn't he )

We could post a big rumour that we (The Photographer's Foundation) were in the running for taking over DPReview. Which is why we set up the company in the first place.

Could create a bit of a laugh (for a while).

If this thread is still up, it seems like the arbitrary nature of moderation at DPR is factual. The OP had found an SD card and was posting to see if the owner could be located. Nothing nasty -- an act of kindness. And the thread was deleted.

    Edit: Yes -- deleted!
