    Subject: Bateman Island

On the way back from our Montana trip, we stopped in Kennewick, WA. There nearby is Bateman Island along the Columbia River. I hope showing 16 resized photos is not too long. I had two more, but DPRevived doesn't allow it (to show more than 16). With the computer program I wrote, I can now load these pictures quite fast with the EXIF data (which is a little bit more than what DPRevived is showing). Part of the trick is to set up the images in a separate folder, where they are organized in a certain sequence (to your liking).

Photo No. 1 - We can see Bateman Island. I'm standing somewhat on the south side, looking north.

    ExposureBiasValue - -0.33
    FocalLength - 55 mm
    Lens Model - EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

Photo No. 2 - We see this pedestrian "bridge" on the left side that links the main land to Bateman Island. I'm not sure if it's natural or man-made. I suspect that it's man-made. A lot of people that are here, are fishermen.

    ExposureBiasValue - -0.33
    FocalLength - 55 mm
    Lens Model - EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

Photo No. 3 - Standing on this "bridge" as we look east we see more storm clouds.

    FocalLength - 18 mm
    Lens Model - EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Photo No. 4 - Looking in the opposite direction, we see more of the same...lots of clouds.

    Lens Model - EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Photo No. 5 - Now I took a path to the north side of the island. I wanted to see the magnificent Columbia River (which by the way, starts in Canada).

    Hi all,

Walking a woodland trail this afternoon and came across this, I've seen many spiders webs but this one takes the gold medal, the spider has completely woven around a plant almost tent like. Don't you just love nature.

Great capture! Are you sure it was made by spiders? I think those types of webs covering whole plants are often made by certain caterpillars as far as I know.

  • June 30, 2023, 7:33 a.m.

I saw these in Indiana. It was not spiders, but something that can result in the death of the tree. I think from memory they may have been tent caterpillars.

I Googled 'tent caterpillar uk' and found this under a Devon article, next door to where I am at the moment in Cornwall, thank you both for that information. 👍

    Brown tail moth caterpillar

The caterpillars may be seen from August to October, then again after winter hibernation, from April to June. The caterpillars spin a silken tent over trees and shrubs under which they shelter during dull weather and at night.

    Mocha,

In the United States, they are known as Gypsy Moths. They can devastate whole forests.
When I lived in Pennsylvania, you could drive along and see whole mountainsides that looked like that.

    Hi Dunlin, Thank You.

Both simplejoy and davidwien alerted me to the fact that it could be caterpillars, I Googled it and found this info.

Subject: Why Bateman Island Is Special?

Some of you who saw my pictures of Bateman Island might have not known what makes it special. It's special in that it is like an oasis in the desert. Without the Columbia River water, it would be mostly grass and small shrubs like the surrounding areas. So I'll show you pictures just before we arrived at the area, then where we crossed over the bridge and where we eventually made it to Bateman Island, where there are lots of trees.

Photo No. 9 - There's a little telephoto compression here, showing Bateman Island and the homes behind it. The homes are on the other side of the Columbia River and are actually quite far from this island, I think more than a half mile away.

    Hi Digirame,

Now that's a place I could spend some time discovering, I also see a 'Great White Egret' in photo 9 😁, more reasons to spend some time there.

    Love the set.

    Mocha,

Thanks. Yes, I saw the white egret too, but I decided to not try to walk closer to it. I did not bring my Tamron 150-600mm lens with me on the long trip. Years ago, when I was there I did see some pretty colorful birds up close in the trees on the pedestrian "bridge". I was hoping I would see them again. They would have looked good with the 55-250mm lens that I was using.

A lot of vacation photos this week. Mocha's were from Cornwall, with birds and the Looe estuary. Photobygms went on a hike and captured dragonflies. Digirame was in eastern Washington State, including Bateman Island, Idaho and Montana. Lots of wide open spaces, mountains -- and wind farms; but no cowboys! He was also at a car show. My favorite of the cars he photographed is the DeLorean. I would love to have had one with those cool doors. I remember such shows in Michigan but havent seen one around here.

Another deer visited Steve T, while Steve P caught a sparrow feeding her young. We also learned about fire bugs and treacherous gypsy moths.

Meanwhile I stayed at home and took shots of the tourists and the Green Danube. Some of you had magnificent clouds and storms. We had one, but during the dark hours...

I think we would all fight over the raspberries!

Lots of helpful comments from you all. Thank you! Keep taking those pictures while the light is so good.

The new weekly thread is open here. Please start using it now.
