This shot puzzles me. I like the flower, the details and the electric purple against the black. It jumps off the screen. The halo at the top? It doesn't matter that I don't know what it is, it simply doesn't trigger a response from me, apart from feeling puzzled. As such, I'd have preferred the flower without it.

* It is interesting to compare this image to the image from Why Not this week.
Both use a road coming in from the lower corners to invite us down the road. Both use lightpoles and roads as major elements. Both are unabashedly manipulated. The outcomes couldn't be more different.
Open Cube has us on the fantasy yellow brick road of the land of Oz. It's all apple pie and happy endings. *

That is quite a view to have from a living room window. It certainly warrants the panorama treatment with multiple horizontal lines. The different skylines are easily distinguished giving the layers. The blues/pinks/oranges are dramatic but also calm.
The Earth shadow colors you have here are quite different to those I am familiar with. It might be different atmospheric conditions or perhaps you boosted the saturation?
Apart from curiosity, it doesn't matter. It's a fine image.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. I think I get where you're coming from! However the theme this was created for was called "light painting", which is what the halo over the flower represents and the flower was lit by that movement of light... If the intention behind the shot was not so centered around the light and showing it, I would agree, that the flower would be more effective alone.

I usually go for very different lighting in a studio setting with flowers, so a shot in that vein could be a nice exception from my numerous attempts at softer lighting, like this:

Excellent shot. Love the lines, nets and above all red clad worker who is very prominent. Your eye focuses on him and full scope of an image emerges. Very effective.

Word Garlic and I automatically think about food and the goodness it brings adding a considerable taste to anything one is making, from soup to stews or salad dressing. Excellent shot and I particularly like b&w treatment. It really excentuate the main subject. Well done.

Excellent capture. Like the mood, the bleeding lights, time of day and above all the pp, without which image would not have the impact it has.

Both excellent. First one is like painting, benefits tremendously from b&w treatment.
Second has superior colours, the layers of various types all against wonderful blue sky.

Simply beautiful in its simplicity. Really like total black background which brings the main subject forward. The blue colours and the halo are fab. Top prize this week.

I'd been wondering about the nearly 3D look and how MinnieV achieved separate from the busy background. It seems that part comes from the line leading from lower left, created by the stem. Then Chris pointed out the removal of color being key. Of course! 😁 Great idea, Minnie.

The original is marvelous, what a delightful find! I love Jim's crop even more because it's not immediately apparent to me that we're viewing a reflection from street level.

I can see the appeal for those who collect antiques of this type, especially if they have knowledge of the purpose of the tools. For me, there's a little too much going on. I would be interested in the potential for close shots of form and texture. The license plates could be very cool to work. I'm thinking more of playful processing, rather than straight photography 😁

Apocalyptic, for sure, despite its "light" title. Dark and disturbing, which makes it impossible to ignore. High impact for me.

Trying B&W recently. Exploring what subjects and scenes better suit B&W.

An exercise in how a photographer can create an image without having much to work with. B&W makes it essential to have line and texture.
Answer: use a wa lens to create the curve of the stem and position it from a corner. Throw the background out of focus expose for the light of the garlic flower and use the mass of detail in the flower head for the subject. it doesn't work until it is viewed large enough to bring out the flower head detail.
