My 12-24 Sigma wide angle had been gathering dust, for a good while. It would not autofocus on my D810 (incompatible), But playing around with it on my D850, I surprisingly found AF works for some reason. This lens dates from my days with the Nikon D70. Suddenly this lens has become useful again.

For my Sunday afternoon walk, I decided to go back to pre mirrorless and take the D850 our for a spin. I had forgotten the pleasure of a good optical viewfinder. When I got home, I found that my pictures were sharp, despite not having IBIS or VR. The Sigma 12-14, is still a good lens. I guess the heft of this camera helps reduce camera shake. I also dug out the 70-200 F4, which does have very good VR

I use my D850 on a tripod, for Architectural photography. I use live view 99% of the time with it. I have been mirrorless since the Olympus EM5, for general photography. The more button driven D850 is more pleasurable to use compared with any mirrorless, so I think I will repeat the experience.

I never used a (D)SLR seriously—just a few times with my in-law’s old Olympus DSLR. I should try it for real.

    Wet Woods

We've had a lot of rain in the last couple of weeks, and the ground is sodden and swampy. So a daily walk has mostly been along the quiet Galloway roads. fortunately there are some beautiful woodlands along the way.

The trees are a mixture of conifers and broadleaves, with the beeches giving a rich russet carpet that contrasts beautifully with the vibrant green moss that grows so well in our temperate rainforest environment.

    This is a nice one.

What's going on there? Is he trying to imitate one of the lions?

No, he just climbed up and stood there. I was hoping for a better composition when he got up, but this was the best I got.

    Confusion arises...

Yes, I liked the ambiguity. It is not a strong one, but I liked the way the guys are placed in the frame and the sense of ambiguity it conveys.

This past week, I finally got around to processing some of the photos I took last Christmas. One of our assignments for my camera club was Intentional Camera Movement. I am curious about your thoughts on some of my initial efforts.

Interesting shots, the last one is the best among them.

Stegmoosalm, before the deeper snow comes
Here's some impressions from the probably last "walk without snow shoes", up to the Stegmoosalm hut. It's one of our old favourites, easy and quick to get up here.

    Please don't edit these images

The view into the mountains from a bit higher up, but still not much snow.

This is my pick, lovely view and a strong composition.

    Storming Lever Castle

We're in the midst of Storm Darragh (probably Dar-argh!!! would be more appropriate looking at the news), so naturally I went out for a bit of a walk this morning. Things aren't looking too bad around here, but I decided to head for somewhere sheltered anyway and eventually found myself wandering towards Lever Castle.

I like 'Attention' of these. And the tree overhanging water which immediately made me think of fishing. Fish tend to hang around under such features.
The 12-100 used to frustrate me, unbalanced on my Pen-F but very capable, lacking at the wide end to make it an all-encompassing solution for my needs.
I recently bought the delightful little Tamron 20-40 f/2.8 but they then released a 17-50 f/4 which I also had to buy.
They now frustrate me as I can never choose between the balance and quality of the smaller lens or the wider reach of the 17-50. Both are really good lenses for my needs though.
