Hey, you literally said “Event photographers are not artists, per se.” Word for word!!!!! Don’t try and drag me into fault without any reason whatsoever for your words!!!!!!! Sort yourself out ffs!!!!!

I don't buy any of that. You are saying that there is a conflict in what SrMi said. The words used mean that there isn't. He's saying that merely being a photographer doesn't make you an artist. Not that complicated, or controversial, I would think.

Saying that event photographers are not artists is a pretty conclusive statement, no matter how you try and dress it up. If it walks like a duck, looks like a duck and quacks like a duck…….. it’s a duck……….

You are ignoring two important words.
@Austinian has written:I recall visiting a gallery in Santa Fe years ago that had several copies of "Moonrise"; the interesting thing was how different they were.
But the print I would really like to own was a large "Clearing Winter Storm". Simply stunning; too bad it was fabulously expensive!
The Andrew Smith Gallery?
Yes, not far from the Georgia O'Keeffe museum. IDK if it's still there; the person at the gallery said something about it moving to Arizona. I'll have to see next time I'm in Santa Fe.

Yep. It's in Tucson now. They had quite a wonderful collection, and would bring anything out of storage if you asked to see it.

I don't know, tekhnē means "art, skill, craft in work; method, system, an art, a system or method of making or doing" :)
Seriously, though, I think event photographers are artists, if they are good at it. I was shooting a lot of simpler things, like groups of tourists in front of the bronze duc in Odessa and it took some art to make it look good and memorable. That is what I was trying to say (per se). Not all artists are event photographers and not all event photographers are artists. Artist and event photographer are not interchangeable terms, though there can be overlap. @BurnImage was using the terms as being identical.

My words were clear. You did not understand what they mean and are now trying to dig yourself out. Just let it be. Let's talk about art and what it means to you.
Why? Per se means intrinsically, i.e., there are event photographers who are artists, but being an event photographer does not qualify you automatically as an artist. Do you disagree?
Interesting, these are 2 images of many from a school grad photoshoot. would you not say these were touching on "art" even though i hate that word used in photography and im no means an artist as much as im a musician like my daughter ,im just a hack muso 😒
this is a quick 2min image of a dance teacher from a dance photoshoot waiting for the next young dancer to arrive . event photography can be not so boring and touch on the arty side.

It's already become a bit too tedious, frankly. Continue like this and this forum will die.
Already? Have you looked at all the posts where actual . . . wait for it . . . Images are being posted?
Gloom and Doom just days into this effort. Threads like this and the forum will die? I don't share your pessimism.
I have never known knowledge to lead to the demise of a technically-oriented field.
Your Website shows a lot of excellent imagery and use of very sophisticated equipment.
I'd be very eager to learn from your expertise in your field. Care to share your advice rather than just criticism at other's attempts to share knowledge?
Rich
Hi Rich
Thanks for having a look at my work, if it resonates with you then that's great. And that's what maters right? Maybe I'm coming down on hard with my my views here. It's deliberate. I want to help shape this forum and its tone. I see a slippery slope towards folk showing off their tech knowledge, without any semblance of any of it relating to actual photographs. Tech talk is great. in the right sections, for those who care. But ultimately it should all be about photography and creating great images (IMO)
I can see that you're passionate.
It's early here and everyone is just getting to know everyone else. I can assure you that the particular members you've decided to take up a fight with have been, in previous fora, the most helpful, encouraging participants in matters ranging from pragmatic, down in the trenches get-the-image advice to the highest levels of understanding color perception and capture, understanding of sensor electronics and mechanics, camera operation and just general photographic issues. There is a wealth of knowledge here, spanning decades of time and many imaging philosophies.
Rich
I'm aware of who the real experts on theory are, and I'm not sure I've singled anyone out for a fight? But, as a suggestion to all the experts. Reprogram yourselves maybe? Learn to speak in simpler language and illustrate your posts with actual photographs. You know: 1. You shouldn't do this because 2 You'll get a better result like this.
In other words, I've read millions of words from very respected and clever folk. But it needs to make us better ARTISTS. I've not seen that to date ......
In the spirit of your own words, then . . . How about examples of your work to illustrate what you are saying?
Hey, your Website says you have the chops. Looking forward to them . . .
Rich
My website is on my profile, nothing to hide and nothing to show off either. I wouldn't mention it, but you've pulled me up on it, so I have to reply. I cant seem to find your website though?
You misunderstood. Sure your Website is in your profile. But you recommended that others use images to illustrate their advice. I'm suggesting you do the same. Looking at your site doesn't give anyone any insight into your philosophy of working.
I haven't listed a Website. I may, in time. But I have and will continue to post images here. I usually give a lot of information about the making of each.
Rich
Ahh ok I understand you now :) Ok, if I ever start a technical thread here it will ONLY be if I have my own photographs to back up what I am trying to say. Because a thread without such photographs to illustrate it is a load of waffle IMO.
As for my own website, as a photographer I post photographs. Nobody give a flying fcuk about the tech aspects of them when they visit my website, (outside of forums like this)........ ;-)
i know where your coming from. but on several occasions on DPR forum i would post an image as a response and quite often get banned for as the mods would say "belittling the op" and a few will just call you a smart a....s so i rarely post an image now and defiantly not give out my web and social sites links. But these forums are defiantly lively that's for sure.
At the beginning of this thread, we had a photographer who claimed to be nailing the exposure present information from RD that indicated that he wasn't. He should be able to learn something from that. I hope he has.
Hi Jim, back to the original thread. i revisited the the raw program but this time i turned on uncompressed raw and the exif data said 14 bit . i usually use compressed raw and even though the file say 14 bit it also says pixel depth 8 bit , im a bit 😁confused now converting the raw again in pure 14 bit to tiff 16 bit im still getting clipping ! why ? and comparing the uncompressed to the compressed they is NO difference at all in the final image from both raw digger and ACR but ACR does not clip the white. any ideas ?

Did you even try moving the exposure slider in your editor over to the left a bit? RawDigger is more a diagnostic tool, not an editor/processor. The editing still needs to be done in Lightroom/ACR or whatever you use…
