I think it completely depends on the needs and types of discussions.

In the adapted lens sub it‘s a mess currently because the main features don‘t work anymore and (if they don‘t decide to include post titles) much of the archive that particular forum served as, is basically gone for good. That‘s unique information about hundreds of old lenses, some of them having been the only mention on the whole web… I‘m sure that‘s not the case with most subs but in some in-depth ones very important context and connections are now just missing.

Of course there are always alternative ways to do things in the future, but it makes me hesitate to put much effort into stuff to be honest.

    A lost opportunity

It's a real pity that we didn't have the speed here, to be able to offer threaded view to those disgrunted users at DPR.
We could certainly benefit from some more contributors here.

For stuff like that it really needs to be archived somewhere.

I wonder if it would be possible to retrieve all the threads intact with the post titles? Has anyone asked?

Well being predominantly a gear site the majority of the discussions will have sub-threads that lend themselves to threaded view.
They are going to lose a lot of valuable posters and honestly what will be left after that?

It's now 7 November. The Forum is broken, I'm seeing an unexpected error has occured, since at least one day ago.

My Total thread count has gone to zero from 10K Posts.

I tried use Archive.org for preserving the DPR News and Forum posts but it didn't work. I was interested in the DPR Forums more.

Agreed. I have been MIA from The Photo for a few weeks as I have been traveling with little time and hit and miss net connection.
I looked at new DPR where I also sometimes contribute to the Sony forum. It's a disaster - impossible to follow any discussion involving a few opinions.

I admit to being surprised at the vehemence of the DPR-bashing in this thead, especially from members who cannot function without threaded view there but seem to cope quite well here ...

Ho ho - back then, one of my tasks was to produce an Instrument List for a gas turbine installation. One day I produced a relational database a la E. F. Codd instead the traditional single "flat" file. It was promptly rejected by our Customer as being unreadable ...

so ive gone to see if theres any new posts in a thread and to see what i have read in the past in that thread. sorry but it just cant tell me that and a waste of my time to try to figure out what i have read in the past, having a coffee before work is limited time and i can catch up very quickly on the gossip ,flat view will never be able to do that.

before my time, i used to design accounting/stock control systems, MRP all menu driven, i even had one of my systems government approved and was in use for 15 years 😎 i designed software that would run the largest building companies in australia including bill of materials. at any one time you could hit a single button and the system would tell the builder exactly how much or how little they actually had in the bank or if they were heading for bankruptcy 😁designing the programs was the easy part being asked to write a working user manual was near impossable 😌 i gave up in the end i made more money as a tradie and liserend to music all day while working instead of living my life in a box 😊

Yes, it does. It says NEW if a post appeared after you closed it last time. Just like in this forum.

I added a simple POLL to this thread - not sure how to navigate to it, I guess it should be at the top above the original post ...

It's at the top of each page.

You could have allowed two choices... I would have voted for both Yes and No:)

I'm not sure why people are arguing about the lack of threaded view on DPReview. It's a done deal. Either accept it stop using the forum. And as for moaning over here - I guess it makes you feel better, but no one from DPReview will be looking (or caring).

DPReview is now like most other forums with some nice added features and a wraparound skin which encompasses galleries, reviews etc.

    Hi

In my case, I cope here mainly by us not having technical discussions. That does make my participation here a small fraction of what it is over there. Or, was. The operative word is now 'was'.
