I'm sorry you're incapable of shooting static subjects as well. I'm sure a photo class might help with that.

    Have a good weekend :)

It is interesting, i have heard some are saying nikon cheaped out on the motors in some lenses?

Agreed, assuming a full frame camera in a typical sized studio shooting headshots through to full length single subjects then f8 to f11 has been the studio photographers go to since forever. This ensures front to back DOF from tip of the nose to back of the ears and so on. But of course it’s a starting point and we may open the aperture for deliberate shallower DOF or other reasons. BUT, the starting point of f8 to f11 is PRECISELY why it can introduce challenges for AF for ANY camera that doesn’t perform focus wide open.

Equally, if shooting crop your equivalent aperture changes. So if shooting m43 substitute f8 for f4 and so on.

Right on with the Sony af system. It's just far in advanced period. And a9 tech from 2017 easily trounces the z7 and z6 cameras (both versions).

The z9 might just be one of the great bodies but his point stands as he said it. A9 tech from 2017 still beats the z7 ala the rest of nikons small bodies by a long way. It's advanced flagship af trickled down.

All I know is that my Sony zoom lenses have quad (yes 4) linear motors and are best in class for AF acquisition. I don’t know how much that affects AF in the real world, but blimey those lenses latch on instantly and track tenaciously. Sony folk and reviews all comment that the GM2 lenses latch on and track faster than earlier generations (on the same bodies). So in that regard yes lens motor tech is a major factor, not just body tech. AFAIK Nikon does not use linear motors, never mind 4 of them…..

I got in a lot of shit on DPReview for linking to a podcast by Roger Cicala, founder of Lens Rentals. He had pointed out the cheap motors Nikon was using. I got in more shit for pointing out where he kinda dismissed Nikon's ML offerings.

Not sure if I got a temporary ban for that or not, but it was information DPReview didn't want put out there.

Some folk are understandingly holding out for a Z6III, especially now it emerges that the Z8 is going larger to something akin to a D850 in size and weight, with a £4000 plus price tag.

When the Z6III finally emerges it’s unlikely to have a stacked sensor and at best it’ll catch up with the Sony A7iv.

In the meantime, you can buy a lightly used A9 with a 24mp stacked sensor from a reputable dealer like MPB with a warranty for around £1500.

I don’t like the ergonomics of that body, which is why I went with the A9II. These have ergonomics and build equal to the Z6II and are available used for around £2200.

You’ll never get a Stacked sensor from Nikon at these price points ……

I do miss the higher resolution Z7 for some work. That’s why I’ve just purchased a used A7Riv with 61mp for £1850 with warranty and 4000 clicks. The perfect complement to my pair of A9II’s. Yes it will be slower for AF and burst rate, but more akin to an R5 than a Z7II in performance.

The Canon r5 tracks like it is clairvoyant. With a 50 1.2 or 85 1.2 and someone moving fast towards I could get almost every shot in perfect focus. Pretty amazing. Wheras the z7 had trouble finding eyes let alone focusing in several situations.

No doubt the R5 is a gem, I went A9II because I MUST have stacked sensors for my work. Now I’m adding a used A7Riv for £1850 to scratch my high resolution itch. Slower than R5 but still way ahead of Z7, with 61mp to boot.

Maybe we should change the title of this thread to Z AF vs Sony AF vs Canon AF.

That way people who are interested in comparisons can read this.

A separate thread on Z AF could focus on understanding Z AF and how to get better results out of it.

I joined this thread to point out how Sony has a mode that solves a problem in the studio that Nikon shooters were asking about and having problems with.. It was a helpful and brand neutral discussion. But then there was (another) “Nikon can do no wrong” meltdown and here we are. I don’t know how that’s solved TBH.

Please, quote where I said that. I'll wait.

In the mean time, I'll just quote you saying you don't understand why if the z7 is good, why people would buy a z9. Because you don't have the intellectual capacity to understand why that's a stupid question, and if you were at all a reasonable person, you'd be pretty embarrassed, but you're here to shill for sony and bash nikon, so I don't expect anything else. That goes for your buddy too.

Please go touch grass, and find another forum to shill on. Thanks.

This is typical of what would take place on DPReview. The thread had sorted itself out and moving along well. I neither shoot studio or astro, so it was of no interest to me. Ghostfox1 jumps in with a comment "This is one of the dumbest things I've seen all week" to Burnimage knowing it's likely to elicit a response. On DPReview this would be a good way to get a thread the fanboys wanted shut down, shut down. On good old DPReview, Burnimage would at least get a warning for the reply, likely get cited for the "broken record" or "not nice" rule, thread would be either shut down or posts picked apart.

Good try Ghostfox, but not going to work here.

You're almost right, nikon bashing happens there all the time, and never gets any push back because doing so gets your posts removed by the mods for 'not being nice'. Then all the bashing continues.

And yes, I'm still correct about that being one of the dumbest things I've seen all week.

By all means, circlejerk away though. I'm checking out of the topic unless something actually intelligent is said.
