ive been back on DPR for not even 24 hours and its like useing a well designed ominos 3 DB on a 512k mac back in the 80s compared to Dbase on a IBM based machine. its heaven by comparrision.

I'm afraid I have no idea what that means... (I was a small kid in the 80s 😅) Could you elaborate?

I don't see any ads on dpreview. After reading this I went looking for ads because I was there earlier and didn't remember seeing ads.I don't have any blockers or extensions installed but I can not see any ads. not one anywhere on the site.. Is this a prank or Twilight zone ?

I can see them too. The ads weren't locally targeted ads as I thought. It was my browser (built on older gecko version) that didn't support whatever trickery they use. Switched to FF and I can see the ads.

Edge with uBlock - no ads.

I don't use Edge enough to install uBlock (have uBlock in Firefox, which I like better).

Do you use and like the b on upper right, with access to ChatGPT? I guess it's easier than signing into OpenAI. Results seems similar.

Android + Chrome = HUGE ads on DPR, filling an entire screen space! Ads by Criteo, Ad Choice, Google. No extensions on Android Chrome, unless install some (hopefully working) app (which has ads) from the store. Reminds me of Blondie's song "One Way Or Another". However, I installed a new-ish browser called Mask Browser that can use most Chrome extensions, installed AdBlock, and no more ads on DPR.

Android + FireFox or Opera Touch = no ads

Of course, no ads on any home PC or laptops with either Linux or Windows + Chrome or FireFox

I think its pretty interesting hearing people complaining about DPR going down only to learn that many of these people were cutting off an important part of their revenue stream.

I don't know how else Gear Patrol might be gaining revenue from DPR, but I leave ads on so the they forum stays open.

Problem is, ads are an attack vector that is not hard to shut down.

It's irresponsible to allow ads on a system you control, because your machine could become an attack vector.

    Yes, while buying reviewed products.

But the revenue from purchases of reviewed products might not be enough to cover the running costs.

The ads are easy enough to ignore and skip over so no big deal for me.

I did look at some product reviews as Iliah pointed out, and they do still have the buy it at Amazon links. Since it is now owned by Gear Patrol, are they merely affiliate links now? If so, that doesn't pay a lot.
