Everyone has their own preference, personally I can't stand threaded view, I like to read the whole thread linearly rather than clicking through a tree. So, hopefully flat view will remain as an option we can set in our preferences.
I like the idea of this site and you have a lot of members which is good but this dogs breakfast landing page is just not a good thing. I want to read 3 to 5 of those categories. Once I'm in a category the UI is pretty nice but I want to be able to subscribe or watch (call it whatever you like) some number of categories and then have a landing page where my subscribed or watched categories are listed and I can see which one(s) have new messages since my last visit.
That is how I use all the other forums I frequent.
DPReview didn't do that, I realize but it was the exception. I made bookmarks for the categories I read but I only ever did that for 2 and I would have liked to watch more but it was just too much futzing around. You guys have chance to do even better :-)
It's a chance we want to take. These first couple of weeks were just a scramble to get something there in time. We purposely chose a platform which gave us the room to develop it as we wanted. Threaded view is a case in point. It's something that we will have, but an impossibility for those that chose a commercial platform with no scope for adaptation. Now the task is to consider how we want it develop., produce designs and proposals and get it there. We will.
This. Great job on the new site but its like walking into Costco for a pack of gum. Way too many categories and too much work to find only the new information and/or select the few topics of interest. Also so few images, and lots of talk (and people who keep copying the previous replies). Keep up the good work and please make the site more user friendly. Peace.
Hello.
I don't know if this has been answered yet but, is it possible at the time of starting a thread to choose two subforums? I think it might be interesting to facilitate to post images in a photo equipment and a descriptive photography subforum simoultaneously…
Thanks.
All of this is useful info… but I primarily participate on my mobile phone. The navigation is a bit less clear to me as these screens don’t appear. I’m a bit lost as to why when I click a thread I get dumped in the middle of a discussion not at the beginning or the end.
What you're looking for (mostly) already exists here on the Threads page. From there you can click the button "All threads" and choose from these options:
You can also combine those views with a category (or sub-category) by clicking the "All categories" button, if you want to really narrow things down further.
Subscribed threads will include threads you've posted to, if your forum options are set to auto-subscribe you (I believe this is the default setting). You can check by clicking your avatar/icon top-right and clicking "Forum options".
My auto-subscribe wasn't on by default, and there doesn't seem to be a way to subscribe to threads that I can find. Plus that drop down doesn't exist on mobile and it doesn't include the difference between threads with my posts and watched threads, which I don't want combined, and it doesn't include a way to mark all as read. It's just not as user-friendly, and I'm trying to help by providing suggestions to make it so.
Plus, in this thread, that drop down doesn't exist. I have to get out of the thread and click into new screens to find that box.
Sorry, at the moment, you have to choose (or are given) a forum to post in. I think that would be quite a radical change to the data entry form and processing to make it work like you want to.
I will mention it to the developers but it won't be on the high priority list just yet.
But yes, once inside a thread and reading it, it doesn't make sense to then say 'I want to see my subscribed threads', so you do need to get to a threads list first.
