Just discovered this thread, didn't know simple.joy was posting my image as example of what someone might want to achieve in-camera with no processing 😀
Here is a 2015 photo, 99% in-camera. Zoom lens, slow shutter speed with both movement and pulling in the lens for different focal lengths. Single image, total luck!!
Sorry - there really should be an option to be notified when we're quoted somewhere... but perhaps I'm missing something! Thanks for providing that interesting sample.

Just to pile on....so I'm not the only one who doesn't get notices when quoted.
Does this qualify as painterly effect? Not a stitched panorama, I cropped half of the original foreground from the bottom. Viewed at 40% on my laptop it looks passable - and looks a little like an oil painting - but at 100% all oof.

WATER RELECTIONS
This is perhaps not quite what's being talked about here, but one in camera painterly effect is the impressionist effect you get when looking at reflections in water, especially effective at Autumn time

Kinda stumbled onto that thought process on the journey I'm currently undertaking.
Now if you can just tell me how to carry 500 cubic feet of water with me and have it stand up vertically in place, I'm all set.
Reflections sometimes work well. The amount of ditortion has to be 'just right' in my opinion. Too much or too little and it just looks like a reflection. Problem is you can't apply it to any old shot - you have to have a reflective surface 😁
Me over here looking for solutions to that problem....with limited success.
