The canal is really a vital drainage channel and very brackish. So I was surprised to see an Australasian grebe (in non-breeding plumage).

A local sports field backs onto one side of the canal and a pair of ospreys like to roost on one of the light towers. But the two must have had a tiff - one was sat looking grumpy about 50m away.

The other was at home enjoying a snack.

The white-faced heron also found a snack.

I don't think I would eat anything out of that canal.
At home the Azaleas are flowering.

But the leaf bugs are getting out of control. The usual soapy water trick hasn't worked so I will have to give them a dose of Yates Advanced bug killer.

A nice set Dicky! Azaleas, is it spring there? We have something eating the leaves of our pepper plants and will have to look into a remedy.

The grebe looks content, Dicky, but the osprey looks like he is nursing a grudge. I assume that's the male because the hen is back home and comfortable. Likely salty worms in the canal for the heron.

Why do you have azaleas in winter? What the Hell?

I hope The Boss comes back to curb your insecticidal rampage before you run amok with the Yates. Rich

It won't be spring for another two months; but the azaleas like the winter temperature and always seem to flower. The bushes are the ones I planted two years ago so they still have a lot of growing to do.

The winter temperature is usually above 20°C during the day so the azaleas make the most of it.

The Boss gets home on Thursday; she would use a flame thrower on the bugs. I'll have to wait until the flowers have finished before using insecticide.

This pair are young adults in their prime; I hope I can find where they nest.
