I no longer have an account on the old place, I voluntarily asked for it to be closed after being sandboxed for the first and only time. I do still visit as a lurker when google shows it to have the answer to an obscure tech question (which the forums inevitably do). If it goes archive only I'll still get those answers for older kit up to closure date.

I agree. Of course it is the nature of refugees who escaped together to make new friends in the location they escaped to. But the way this site is set up is more conducive to finding those new friends. The Threads view is a great avenue for finding interesting posts that you might never have stumbled upon at the old site. The subforums here are more permeable and don't contain us thoroughly into brand-based silos the way the old site did. And more interactions built across the silos means less tribalism and a more pleasant atmosphere.

I don’t know the how or the why exactly but it’s clear at this point that DPReview is staying on. Richard Butler wouldn’t be producing video reviews for DPRTV and promising further content and “updates” in due course if they were still just archiving and winding down; either Amazon have had a complete change of heart or someone else is in the process of buying the place (I’m thinking the latter since that would explain why they can’t announce anything yet).

You've noticed that too? It's funny how a UI difference can have such an effect.

I agree. I've wandered into the m4/3 forum (one m4/3 forum) as it showed a heading with BIF in it. Same goes for 2 or 3 other forums. On DPReview, it was basically all Nikon.
I also think lack of a gear list area is a plus. For years on DPReview I didn't have one, but fellows made a big deal of it, you don't own any gear and so on, so I laid everything out, probably 4 or 5 bodies, 3 Nikon exotic telephotos, plus the Trinity, some primes, took and posted a snap, and that was the end of that discussion. But I'd prefer no gear list.

Funny, it's just about the only DPReview feature we haven't been asked for. Now, if someone does, we can say 'the community's against it'.
To me it always smacked of 'my camera's more pro than yours so I'm a better photographer'.

Or, look at me, I'm clearly on commission ;-)

You can’t win. But I’m fine with the current ability to list kit under a profile. No need for a special field, or pushing it in peoples faces, AFAIC.

I dont think that kind of support would arise at the old place. Thanks, jaberg!

Let me also add that I personally dont regard a gear list as a bragging contest: it tells me who I am interfacing with and gives useful context.

By the way, I like your inventive byline.

The special field would be blank for me as I only have one camera donated to me and don't have a great deal of expertise with photography.

But you have time on your side. Looking at the poll on age, and given that you mentioned yours, more than most anyone here. Statistically of course, but also hopefully actually.

Why leave it blank? It will not always be so, and the info is useful for those who interact with you and who want to offer positive criticisms and encouragement.

We have a Beginners' Questions forum, with lots of people wanting to help beginners but no beginners for them to help. You could make their day.

It depends on other posters to some degree. There are some very knowledgeable people who are still on dpreview only, especially in the printing forum. If they were to come here I'd leave dpreview, but as it is I'd continue visiting both.

I've got several questions for that section, but I'm loathe to visit because of the endless bloody squabbling about the definition of exposure. 😕
