Norms of acceptable behavior change over time.

In today's western society, we do not define "taking offense" from the point of view of the offender. It is defined from the point of view of the person offended. So if offender thinks they did not offend (intentionally or unintentionally), that does not mean there was no offense.

It just needs a bit of empathy for other people to avoid using offensive language.
